Scorpio: meaning, dates, ruler and traits

The intense, private eighth sign, linked with depth, loyalty and an eye for what lies beneath the surface.

Scorpio lands in deep autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, as the light fades and leaves fall. Astrologers describe it as the sign of depth: trust, loyalty, secrets and the willingness to look at difficult things directly. A Scorpio Sun is often portrayed as private and intense, with a strong radar for what is not being said.

The symbol: the Scorpion

The scorpion is small, armoured and quiet until provoked, which fits the sign's reputation for reserve and intensity. In Greek myth a scorpion was sent to confront the hunter Orion, and the two were set at opposite sides of the sky so that one is rising while the other sets.

Element, modality and ruler

Water signs are described as feeling-led, intuitive and attuned to atmosphere.

Fixed signs sit mid-season and are read as stabilisers. The Sun enters Scorpio in the middle of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere.

Scorpio has two rulers. The traditional ruler is Mars, shared with Aries; Pluto, found in 1930, was later assigned as the modern ruler by many astrologers. Mars is read as the drive to act, Pluto as the pull toward transformation and what is hidden. Traditional astrologers keep Mars alone; modern ones use both.

Strengths and shadow themes

Some of this may feel familiar and some may not. Treat the lists as prompts for reflection, not a verdict.

Strengths people often recognise

  • Stays steady when a conversation gets difficult
  • Loyal to the few people who earn full trust
  • Sees through a polished surface to the motive underneath
  • Commitment: when it takes something on, it follows through

Shadow themes to reflect on

  • Keeping secrets long after they have stopped protecting anything
  • Testing people instead of asking them
  • Holding a grudge as a form of memory
  • All-or-nothing judgements of others

Scorpio as Sun, Moon and Rising

The Sun sign comes from your birth date, the Moon sign from the date and ideally the time, and the Rising sign from the exact time and place.

Scorpio Sun
Sun in Scorpio describes a core style of depth. The reading suggests feeling most like yourself when you are getting to the truth underneath things.
Scorpio Moon
Moon in Scorpio is read as an emotional style that runs deep and shows little. Feelings are strong and kept private until trust is established. The reflection is what it would be like to share one feeling earlier than usual.
Scorpio Rising
Rising in Scorpio is often linked with a steady, magnetic first impression: direct eye contact, economy with words, a sense of reserve. Your Rising sign needs your birth time and place.

Scorpio compatibility overview

Scorpio shares water with Cancer and Pisces, traditionally a pairing of strong emotional understanding. Taurus sits opposite, so the shared theme is trust and what each person holds on to.

Sign pairings are one layer; Moons, Risings and planets add more. See the compatibility report for two charts.
