Pisces: meaning, dates, ruler and traits

The imaginative, compassionate twelfth sign, linked with dreams, empathy and the art of the unseen.

Pisces is the last sign of the wheel and falls at the end of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, just before the March equinox begins the cycle again. Astrologers read that position as the theme of the sign: endings, imagination and a sense of connection to everything. A Pisces Sun is often portrayed as gentle and intuitive, with a rich inner life.

The symbol: the Two Fish

The sign is drawn as two fish swimming in opposite directions, tied together by a cord. Astrologers read the pair as the pull between the practical world and the inner one. In one Greek telling, Aphrodite and her son Eros escaped the monster Typhon by turning into fish and tying themselves together, which is where the cord comes from.

Element, modality and ruler

Water signs are described as feeling-led, intuitive and attuned to atmosphere.

Mutable signs close a season and are read as adapters. The Sun enters Pisces near the end of winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

Pisces has two rulers. The traditional ruler is Jupiter, shared with Sagittarius; Neptune, found in 1846, was later assigned as the modern ruler by many astrologers. Jupiter is read as faith and generosity, Neptune as imagination, dreams and dissolving boundaries. Traditional astrologers keep Jupiter alone; modern ones use both.

Pisces as Sun, Moon and Rising

The Sun sign comes from your birth date, the Moon sign from the date and ideally the time, and the Rising sign from the exact time and place.

Pisces Sun
Sun in Pisces describes a core style of imagination. The reading suggests feeling most like yourself when you are open to feeling, art and what cannot be put into words.
Pisces Moon
Moon in Pisces is read as an emotional style that is porous and sensitive to atmosphere. Music, water and solitude are said to give it room. The reflection is how to tell which feelings are yours and which belong to the room.
Pisces Rising
Rising in Pisces is often linked with a soft, dreamy first impression: a gentle manner, a faraway look, an easy sympathy. Your Rising sign needs your birth time and place.

Pisces compatibility overview

Pisces shares water with Cancer and Scorpio, traditionally a pairing of deep emotional understanding. Virgo sits opposite, so imagination meets precision, and each can offer the other what it is missing.

Sign pairings are one layer; Moons, Risings and planets add more. See the compatibility report for two charts.
