Sagittarius: meaning, dates, ruler and traits

The restless, optimistic ninth sign, linked with travel, belief and the search for a bigger view.

Sagittarius closes autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, as the year heads toward its shortest days. Astrologers describe it as the sign of exploration: travel, study, philosophy and the urge to find out what lies beyond the next ridge. A Sagittarius Sun is often portrayed as frank and good-humoured, happiest with room to roam.

The symbol: the Archer

The Archer is a centaur, half human and half horse, drawing a bow toward something far away. The image joins instinct and aim, and astrologers use it for a sign that points itself at a distant target. In Greek tradition the centaur in the sky is sometimes linked with Chiron, the wise teacher of heroes.

Element, modality and ruler

Fire signs are described as spirited, expressive and quick to act.

Mutable signs close a season and are read as adapters. The Sun enters Sagittarius near the end of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere.

Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system, rules Sagittarius, and no outer planet shares the rulership. Jupiter is the chart's symbol for expansion, learning, belief and the wish to see further; Pisces is the other sign it rules in the traditional scheme.

Sagittarius as Sun, Moon and Rising

The Sun sign comes from your birth date, the Moon sign from the date and ideally the time, and the Rising sign from the exact time and place.

Sagittarius Sun
Sun in Sagittarius describes a core style of exploration. The reading suggests feeling most like yourself when you are moving toward a bigger view or a new horizon.
Sagittarius Moon
Moon in Sagittarius is read as an emotional style that wants room and meaning. Feelings are often handled by going outdoors, travelling or finding the larger story. The reflection is what the feeling says before it is turned into a lesson.
Sagittarius Rising
Rising in Sagittarius is often linked with a friendly, spirited first impression: open gestures, easy laughter, a readiness to talk about big questions. Your Rising sign needs your birth time and place.

Sagittarius compatibility overview

Sagittarius shares fire with Aries and Leo, traditionally an adventurous and cheerful combination. Gemini sits opposite, the sign of the many small questions to Sagittarius' large one, and the two are often described as natural travelling companions.

Sign pairings are one layer; Moons, Risings and planets add more. See the compatibility report for two charts.
