Aquarius: meaning, dates, ruler and traits

The independent, inventive eleventh sign, linked with friendship, ideals and thinking differently.

Aquarius arrives in the middle of winter in the Northern Hemisphere. Astrologers describe it as the sign of the group and the future: friendship, causes, invention and the wish to improve how things are done. An Aquarius Sun is often portrayed as friendly but independent, and as someone who likes to think things through from first principles.

The symbol: the Water-Bearer

The Water-Bearer is a figure pouring water from a jar, an odd picture for an air sign, since Aquarius belongs to the element of air. Astrologers read the pouring as sharing what you know with everyone, rather than keeping it for yourself.

Element, modality and ruler

Air signs are described as curious, sociable and idea-minded.

Fixed signs sit mid-season and are read as stabilisers. The Sun enters Aquarius in the middle of winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

Aquarius has two rulers. The traditional ruler is Saturn, shared with Capricorn; Uranus, found in 1781, was later assigned as the modern ruler by many astrologers. Saturn is read as structure and principle, Uranus as the sudden, the original and the unconventional. Traditional astrologers keep Saturn alone; modern ones use both.

Aquarius as Sun, Moon and Rising

The Sun sign comes from your birth date, the Moon sign from the date and ideally the time, and the Rising sign from the exact time and place.

Aquarius Sun
Sun in Aquarius describes a core style of independence. The reading suggests feeling most like yourself when you can think for yourself and try new ways.

Moon in Aquarius is read as an emotional style that likes space and perspective. Feelings are often handled by stepping back and looking at the pattern. The reflection is whether distance is helping or just postponing the feeling.
Aquarius Rising
Rising in Aquarius is often linked with a friendly but slightly aloof first impression: original style, an interest in your ideas, a certain cool. Your Rising sign needs your birth time and place.

Aquarius compatibility overview

Aquarius shares air with Gemini and Libra, traditionally a pairing of fast talk and shared curiosity. Leo sits opposite, so independence meets warmth and attention, a combination often described as a lesson in being both individual and close.

Sign pairings are one layer; Moons, Risings and planets add more. See the compatibility report for two charts.
