Capricorn: meaning, dates, ruler and traits

The disciplined, patient tenth sign, linked with ambition, responsibility and building for the long term.

Capricorn begins at the December solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, the shortest day of the year, after which the light slowly returns. Astrologers read that turning point as the theme of the sign: patient work toward something that lasts. A Capricorn Sun is often portrayed as serious, capable and quietly ambitious, with a dry sense of humour.

The symbol: the Sea-Goat

The Sea-Goat is a goat with the tail of a fish, a creature that climbs mountains and swims in deep water. Astrologers read the image as the ability to move between the practical summit and the inner depths. Pictures of goat-fish figures appear in Babylonian art, which makes this one of the oldest images in the zodiac.

Element, modality and ruler

Earth signs are described as practical, patient and attached to the tangible.

Cardinal signs open a season and are read as initiators. The Sun enters Capricorn at the start of winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

Saturn, the ringed planet named for the Roman god of agriculture and harvest, rules Capricorn, and no outer planet shares the rulership. Saturn is the chart's symbol for structure, limits, commitment and the lessons that arrive with time; Aquarius shares it in the traditional scheme.

Capricorn as Sun, Moon and Rising

The Sun sign comes from your birth date, the Moon sign from the date and ideally the time, and the Rising sign from the exact time and place.

Capricorn Sun
Sun in Capricorn describes a core style of purpose. The reading suggests feeling most like yourself when you are building something that lasts.
Capricorn Moon
Moon in Capricorn is read as an emotional style that is composed and private. Feelings are often handled quietly and practically. The reflection is what would be different if some of them were said aloud sooner.
Capricorn Rising
Rising in Capricorn is often linked with a composed, serious first impression: measured, capable, a little formal until the ice breaks. Your Rising sign needs your birth time and place.

Capricorn compatibility overview

Capricorn shares earth with Taurus and Virgo, traditionally a steady and practical combination. Cancer sits opposite, setting duty against care, and the two often have a lot to discuss about what a secure life looks like.

Sign pairings are one layer; Moons, Risings and planets add more. See the compatibility report for two charts.
