Year of the Horse: years, element cycle and traits
The seventh animal, traditionally linked with independence, sociability and a love of the open road.
Animal: 馬 mǎ · Earthly branch: 午 wǔ
The Horse is seventh in the order and has been a symbol of speed, travel and perseverance in China since the dynasties that depended on cavalry and post roads. Its sign marks the middle of the day on the traditional clock, the hour when the Sun is highest.
Horse years from 1924 to 2031
The Chinese zodiac animal changes at Lunar New Year, not on 1 January. Each row shows the date the Horse year begins and the last day before the next animal takes over. Dates follow China Standard Time (UTC+8) and are computed from the positions of the Sun and the new Moon.
| Year | Element and polarity | Starts (Lunar New Year) | Ends |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1930 | Metal Horse (Yang) | ||
| 1942 | Water Horse (Yang) | ||
| 1954 | Wood Horse (Yang) | * | |
| 1966 | Fire Horse (Yang) | ||
| 1978 | Earth Horse (Yang) | ||
| 1990 | Metal Horse (Yang) | ||
| 2002 | Water Horse (Yang) | ||
| 2014 | Wood Horse (Yang) | ||
| 2026 | Fire Horse (Yang) |
* In 1954 the new Moon falls within minutes of midnight in China, so a calendar built another way can differ by a day. Orrery Lane follows the astronomical definition.
If you were born in January or February, check the start date before assuming your animal. For example, a person born on 15 January 2026 was born before the 2026 Lunar New Year on 2026-02-17, so their zodiac animal is the Snake from the previous year, not the Horse. Birth place can also matter near the boundary, because the date is set in China time.
The element cycle for the Horse
The Chinese calendar pairs the 12 animals with five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each element covers two consecutive years, first yang and then yin, so the full pairing of animal and element repeats only every 60 years. The Horse is a yang animal, and in the Four Pillars (BaZi) system its own fixed element is Fire, which is separate from the element of the year.
- Wood Horse (1954, 2014): the Wood element is read as growth, planning and reaching outward.
- Fire Horse (1966, 2026): the Fire element is read as warmth, expression and quick action.
- Earth Horse (1978): the Earth element is read as steadiness, care and holding things together.
- Metal Horse (1930, 1990): the Metal element is read as clarity, precision and firm edges.
- Water Horse (1942, 2002): the Water element is read as adaptability, depth and flowing around obstacles.
The traditional hour of the Horse is 11:00 to 13:00. The popular zodiac year begins at Lunar New Year, while the Four Pillars system begins its year at Lichun, around 4 February; the two can give different animals for dates in early February, as explained on how we calculate.
Traits as reflection
People born in a Horse year are traditionally described as free-spirited, friendly and lively. The character is often said to value independence and to feel most alive on the move. None of this describes every person born in a Horse year; read it as a mirror to hold up, not a rule.
Strengths people often recognise
- Warm and talkative with new people
- Direct and honest about what they want
- Independent and quick to learn by doing
- Good company on a trip or a project
Themes to reflect on
- Impatience with constraints
- Starting out before the route is clear
- Straying from a commitment when it feels confining
Horse compatibility table
Traditional folk compatibility compares animals by position on the 12-step cycle. The Horse's trine allies are the Tiger and Dog; its sixth-harmony partner is the Goat; the opposite animal, the traditional clash, is the Rat. These are folk groupings, offered as conversation starters rather than verdicts on any relationship.
| Animal | Traditional relation |
|---|---|
| Rat | Opposite on the cycle (clash) |
| Ox | Traditional harm pairing |
| Tiger | Trine ally |
| Rabbit | No special relation |
| Dragon | No special relation |
| Snake | No special relation |
| Goat | Sixth-harmony partner |
| Monkey | No special relation |
| Rooster | No special relation |
| Dog | Trine ally |
| Pig | No special relation |
The animal is only one part of a Chinese chart, and Western signs add another layer. See the compatibility report for two-chart comparisons, or browse the 12 zodiac signs.
Questions to reflect on
- What am I running toward, and what am I running from?
- Which commitment feels confining, and what does it give me?
- Who would enjoy the road more with me?
