Year of the Dragon: years, element cycle and traits
The fifth animal and the only mythical one, traditionally linked with confidence, ambition and presence.
Animal: 龍 lóng · Earthly branch: 辰 chén
The Dragon is the only imaginary creature in the zodiac, and in China it has long been a symbol of imperial power, rain and good omens. Unlike the fire-breathing monsters of European stories, the Chinese dragon is usually a benevolent, water-linked being. In the Great Race story the Dragon could have won easily by flying but stopped to help others, a detail that explains its fifth place.
Dragon years from 1924 to 2031
The Chinese zodiac animal changes at Lunar New Year, not on 1 January. Each row shows the date the Dragon year begins and the last day before the next animal takes over. Dates follow China Standard Time (UTC+8) and are computed from the positions of the Sun and the new Moon.
| Year | Element and polarity | Starts (Lunar New Year) | Ends |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1928 | Earth Dragon (Yang) | ||
| 1940 | Metal Dragon (Yang) | ||
| 1952 | Water Dragon (Yang) | ||
| 1964 | Wood Dragon (Yang) | ||
| 1976 | Fire Dragon (Yang) | ||
| 1988 | Earth Dragon (Yang) | * | |
| 2000 | Metal Dragon (Yang) | ||
| 2012 | Water Dragon (Yang) | ||
| 2024 | Wood Dragon (Yang) |
* In 1988 the new Moon falls within minutes of midnight in China, so a calendar built another way can differ by a day. Orrery Lane follows the astronomical definition.
If you were born in January or February, check the start date before assuming your animal. For example, a person born on 15 January 2024 was born before the 2024 Lunar New Year on 2024-02-10, so their zodiac animal is the Rabbit from the previous year, not the Dragon. Birth place can also matter near the boundary, because the date is set in China time.
The element cycle for the Dragon
The Chinese calendar pairs the 12 animals with five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each element covers two consecutive years, first yang and then yin, so the full pairing of animal and element repeats only every 60 years. The Dragon is a yang animal, and in the Four Pillars (BaZi) system its own fixed element is Earth, which is separate from the element of the year.
- Wood Dragon (1964, 2024): the Wood element is read as growth, planning and reaching outward.
- Fire Dragon (1976): the Fire element is read as warmth, expression and quick action.
- Earth Dragon (1928, 1988): the Earth element is read as steadiness, care and holding things together.
- Metal Dragon (1940, 2000): the Metal element is read as clarity, precision and firm edges.
- Water Dragon (1952, 2012): the Water element is read as adaptability, depth and flowing around obstacles.
The traditional hour of the Dragon is 07:00 to 09:00. The popular zodiac year begins at Lunar New Year, while the Four Pillars system begins its year at Lichun, around 4 February; the two can give different animals for dates in early February, as explained on how we calculate.
Traits as reflection
People born in a Dragon year are traditionally described as confident, ambitious and magnetic. The Dragon is the most admired of the twelve, and the character is often said to have large plans and the charisma to share them. None of this describes every person born in a Dragon year; read it as a mirror to hold up, not a rule.
Strengths people often recognise
- Big-picture vision and the courage to say it aloud
- Generous with help when asked
- Natural presence in a room
- Willingness to try what others call impossible
Themes to reflect on
- Taking on more than can be finished
- Impatience with detail
- Hearing disagreement as disloyalty
Dragon compatibility table
Traditional folk compatibility compares animals by position on the 12-step cycle. The Dragon's trine allies are the Rat and Monkey; its sixth-harmony partner is the Rooster; the opposite animal, the traditional clash, is the Dog. These are folk groupings, offered as conversation starters rather than verdicts on any relationship.
| Animal | Traditional relation |
|---|---|
| Rat | Trine ally |
| Ox | No special relation |
| Tiger | No special relation |
| Rabbit | Traditional harm pairing |
| Snake | No special relation |
| Horse | No special relation |
| Goat | No special relation |
| Monkey | Trine ally |
| Rooster | Sixth-harmony partner |
| Dog | Opposite on the cycle (clash) |
| Pig | No special relation |
The animal is only one part of a Chinese chart, and Western signs add another layer. See the compatibility report for two-chart comparisons, or browse the 12 zodiac signs.
Questions to reflect on
- Which of my plans needs one more careful step?
- Who helped me last time and have I said so?
- What would I do differently if disagreement were just information?
